The Blowhole

La Bufadora ("The Snorter") is a marine geyser located on the Punta Banda peninsula, about 30 minutes south of Ensenada. It's one of the largest blowholes in North America, sending plumes of seawater up to 100 feet into the air during big swells.

The blowhole is created by a sea cave beneath the cliff. As waves rush in, the trapped air and water are forced through a narrow opening in the rock, creating a spectacular eruption of spray and sound.

The walk to the viewpoint passes through a lively market strip of vendor stalls selling churros, chicharrones, coconut candy, souvenirs, and — of course — fish tacos.

Getting There

From Downtown Ensenada

Tips for Your Visit

  • Go at high tide — the blowhole is most dramatic when the ocean is rough and the tide is high
  • Bring pesos — vendors prefer pesos, though many accept USD
  • Try the churros — the fresh-made churros from the vendor stalls are legendary
  • Wear layers — it can be windy at the viewpoint, even on warm days
  • Don't rush — browse the market, enjoy the views from the peninsula road, and stop at Punta Banda for the scenery
  • Combine with wine — La Bufadora + Valle de Guadalupe makes a perfect full-day trip from Ensenada
